Choir: Can you sing? Choir usually sings in the 8:30 a.m. worship service (usually only the first three Sundays of each month, starting just after Labor Day through Father’s Day … choir members are given a detailed calendar). Members of the choir meet Wednesdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. for rehearsal and on the Sundays the choir sings in front of the church, they gather at 8:00 a.m. for warm up. [FAQs]
Schedule an informal audition with our choir director, Dr. Gordon Borror, (gborror@vbconline.org or 503-554-2623) to see about joining.
Choir FAQs
Do I need to be able to read music to sing in the Choir?
Not necessarily. Most choir members do read music, but some learn their part by rote. Prospective members must demonstrate good musicianship by being able to sing on pitch, maintain steady rhythm, display good vocal production and control.
Do I need to be “Solo Quality” to sing in the choir?
The experience, and degree of vocal abilities within the membership varies. You won’t be asked to sing alone unless you wish to be considered for a solo.
How do I know which part I should sing?
In your conversation with Loren if you are uncertain ask for his recommendation and he will advise you as to the best placement.
Must I be a church member before joining the choir?
No. However, many people decide to join after singing in the choir.
What happens if I have to miss a Wednesday rehearsal?
You will be missed and it is most likely it will be in the best interest of the choir that you not sing on Sunday if you also missed the previous Wednesday.
What do I wear on Sundays?
Most of your clothing will be covered by a robe, but we ask all choir members to be sensitive about shoes or jewelry that could be distracting.
What happens if I cannot be there every Sunday?
You will be missed. When you have a large choir, and singers communicate their schedule conflicts in advance, some natural revolving of personnel can work just fine. Singers are encouraged to make a dedicated commitment to the choir’s dates but occasional absences due to illness, work and family commitments are understandable.
