Washington County ranks as the most ethnically diverse county in the Portland-metro region. ESOL provides an opportunity to live out our value of “Cultures Connect in Unity” as we serve neighbors who want to focus on their English skills. Language learning involves mutual vulnerability and often prompts discussions about values. Most of the “nations” have come to the USA and we grow in understanding of the Creator God when we interact with them. Non-English speakers know that language skills are the foundation to solving practical problems – poverty due to unemployment, injustice due to misunderstandings, and more!
Discovering and meeting real needs, expanding our view of God, serving the nations – these are just a few reasons ESOL ministry is strategic.
